Penny Nave and Tom Hopson

Harold McCormick Elementary School welcomes Tom Hopson who will serve as Interim Principal for the 2018-2019 school year. He has 20 years of experience in education and has spent the last five of those years serving as Assistant Principal at Elizabethton High School.

“I’m excited to be principal of Harold McCormick,” Hopson said. “We have great teachers and students that have worked hard to make the transition into a new school year really smooth. We have had some really good momentum over the last few years – most recently by being named a Level 5 school – and we’re excited to continue that growth and success.”

Hopson holds a Master of Education and is currently working on his Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from East Tennessee State University. Prior to working at EHS, he taught for 15 years in Virginia. During that time, he served as middle school band director, high school band director, and chair of the Virginia High School Fine Arts Department for nine years. In 2010 he was named “One of the Top 50 Directors who Make a Difference” for the state of Virginia and ranked among the nation’s top 50 band directors.

Hopson is a graduate of Elizabethton High School and an HME alumnus. “I grew up here and went to school at Harold McCormick, so this is coming home for me,” he said. He will be working with Assistant Principal Penny Nave.

Hopson will be temporarily replaced at EHS by Interim Assistant Principal Jeremy Humphrey, who is new to ECS. The movement in leadership resulted from Travis Thompson going on military leave. HME Principal Eric Wampler is filling in for Thompson as Interim Director of Early Learning, Curriculum & Testing 6-12, and Data Services.
