Recent visitors to downtown Elizabethton will notice colorful barn quilts and corresponding personal stories on display in the breezeway. These are the culmination of a student-organized K-12 storytelling and art contest in Elizabethton City Schools called East TN Tuff Tales.
Nine winners will present their designs and stories of trial and triumph on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 10:55 a.m. for members of the public and the media. The contest concluded in November, and since then, students have painted their designs which are now on public display.
Student artists and authors include
- Elementary: Reagan May and Rylee May
- Middle: Caden Rogers, Tessa Norris, and Reagan Price
- High: Alexis Shelton, Jazmyne Turner, Will Bowers, Macy Burleson, Kayla Story
The competition was organized by Sarah Morris’ enrichment class at T. A. Dugger Jr. High School last fall. Mrs. Morris presented the idea, and students were responsible for planning, presenting and promoting the contest system-wide.
Their work sparked the interest of the American Patchwork and Quilting Podcast and drew support from local artists and storytellers.
