West Side named Reward School, ECS named Exemplary

Proud to be a Reward School

West Side Elementary School was again ranked among the top five percent of schools in the state and was named a Reward School. Schools may be designated Reward Schools based on performance or progress, and WSE was recognized for performance. This marks the fourth time in the last six years ECS schools have been recognized as Reward School.

As achievement scores and graduation rates continue to improve statewide, West Side continues to rank among top schools in the state. Principal John Wright attributed this success to the adaptability of teachers and students and to high expectations at all grade levels.

“With changing standards, we were expecting much lower scores,” said Wright. “We were pleasantly surprised to see we were close to our normal scores. The revised standards and increased rigor have challenged students and teachers.  Our scores show that our students and teachers have done what it takes to effectively teach and learn the revised standards. West Side has a long tradition of academic excellence, and we have high expectations that all students will continue at the level of achievement to maintain that excellence.”

He said all elementary schools work closely together to build a strong academic foundation. He tells students this is the key to success in higher grade levels and to opportunities in college and career after graduation.

This system-wide approach has proven itself a success as Elizabethton City Schools was again ranked among top districts. For the second time in five years, ECS has been named an Exemplary School District. The 48 districts that received this designation exceeded expected growth for all students and for each historically underserved student group.
